John Davis is the marketing director at Plum Health in a rural Midwestern county and has recently been asked to join a committee of stakeholders to perform a community needs assessment. The other stakeholders are Kendra Boudreau, the manager of Township Community Action, Inc.; Felix Stevens, supervisor at the County Department of Public Health; Luke Townsend, a member of the Catholic Interfaith Committee; Ida Bonin, a member of the Cooperative on Food Bank Assistance; and Molly Greer, the marketing manager at St. Mary Medical Center. The committee was brought together by Luke and Ida, who approached Plum Health and St. Mary Medical Center about reassessing the community to better serve the needs of the Hispanic population. John knows that the county has a population of approximately 100,000 residents, but what makes their community unique is the dense population of Hispanic families, of which a high percentage are migrant farm workers. This population has been considered vulnerable with relation to healthcare services and topics. As John sits down to the table, he reads a handout of the information that has been compiled regarding the Hispanic community. He is startled when he sees that 18% of the population identifies as Hispanic, which is up from 15% the year before. Furthermore, it is estimated that 10% are considered undocumented, which limits access to healthcare combined with risk of deportation. “No wonder they are asking us to reassess our needs assessment,” he thinks to himself as he continues down the page. On average, the family unit consists of six members in one household, and of those members 16 years and younger, 45% are bilingual. When the stakeholders are all seated, the meeting starts with a discussion of the demographic information provided. Surprise is shared by all at the rapid growth of the Hispanic population, as well as the understanding that a needs assessment will be aimed at improving the healthcare services to this group. “Given this demographic information, where are the current shortcomings?” asks Molly, straight to the point. “We see a lot of preventable diseases, both in children and adults, so I think immunizations and health education are going to be of extreme importance,” notes Felix. “There is also a propensity toward obesity, heavy smoking across the entire population, which starts young, and several sexually transmitted diseases are prevalent in the community, which are preventable with the proper measures.” “I would add heart disease and other cardiovascular diseases as well as cancer prevention to that list,” John says. Kendra offers some possible causes for the population’s current health status. “There are so many difficulties that face this population. Imagine yourself in a foreign country and attempting to obtain quality healthcare for you or your family.
