Plato’s Republic, which begins with a discussion of justice, develops into a conversation about awakening to all that is real. It is about self-transformation, which is most evident in the famous allegory of the cave. The purpose of this essay is to articulate and explain the transformation of the philosopher and consider its application to you in this time and place.

In the first part of the essay, about two thirds of the project overall, describe the prisoner’s awakening and ascent out of the cave of ignorance, through the world of opinion, and finally to the heights of knowledge. This will require your explaining the distinction between opinion and knowledge. This should take approximately two thirds of the paper. Therefore, in the final third of the essay, consider this distinction as it applies to you and your life, especially in this time of the coronavirus pandemic. In what way does it change how you think about the world? How might it inform your decisions or choices? Will it affect the way you behave in the future?
