 Explain how the market mechanism operates with regard to the
allocation of resources, and critically analyse the importance of
government engagement concerning climate change.

Your task is to:
 Explain the importance of different political environments in which
businesses operate. Critically analyse these differences, citing
examples of how they might influence business in either positive or
negative ways.
Writing the Essay:
To help you in the task, you are advised to adopt the following guidelines:
Step One = The Information required
 Since you are required to write a continuous 2,000 word
continuous essay using Harvard referencing using a range of
tools of analysis, your first task will be to understand what the
question is asking you to do.
 Once you are satisfied that you understand the question,
formulate an essay plan. You need an introduction, which sets
out your terms of reference. You need to define technical
terms. You need to consider the order in which you are going to
present your discussion. This is an important aspect of essay
writing, as you need to be able to link paragraphs without the
use of bullet points or sub-headers. You will need to provide a
conclusion, which acts as a brief summary of your findings.
Step Two = Collecting, Managing and Using References and Data
 Having established what you are going to do to answer the question, you now
need to collect sufficient data, from text books, journal articles, the Economist
or quality press to use in the essay.
 Identify the lecture and seminar sessions, which cover the topic in the Module
Information Pack. Look at the readings listed as a starting point for your
research.
 Keep a detailed note of the sources you use to obtain your ideas and support
for your answer. Note, you should avoid cutting and pasting material. This
practice is dangerous, as it may lead to the academic offence of plagiarism.
Write the ideas down in your own words. Give a reference to recognise
where the original idea, or the support for your argument came from. E.g:
Sloman (2017) suggested that there is a relationship between free markets
and poor social cohesion. Whilst you are only paraphrasing the many lines of
text used to convey the argument in the original text, you are showing that you
have understood the idea, and have acknowledged that it originally came from
Sloman and not from you.
 Try to avoid using direct quotes. They should be used very sparingly for
emphasis only. There is very little value added in a string of quotes. If you
must use direct quotes, you must use quotation marks and provide additional
details of the page on which the quote appears.
 Try to identify relevant graphs, data or other tools of analysis to supplement
your answer. When using such diagrams, remember to use your own
numbering system. The first diagram you use will be Figure 1 – even if it is
Figure 7 in your source material!
Such a diagram should be fully labelled, titled and the source provided. This
source, along with all other references used should be included in the
bibliography at the end of the essay.
Step Three = Writing up
 Having established your essay plan, collected sufficient data and ideas with
references to support them, you can now write the essay.
 When you have finished writing the essay, read through it once again and ask
yourself:
 Does it have an introduction, which sets out the terms of reference?
 Does it address all the relevant issues?
 Are the ideas attributed to the original author using Harvard Referencing?
 Does the essay flow seamlessly from one paragraph to the next?
 Are there diagrams and/or data or other forms of analysis to support my
findings?
 Is there a conclusion, which briefly summarises your main findings?
 Have I cross- referenced all items in a bibliography, presented in alphabetical
order by author surname?
 Are full author/publisher details provided in the bibliography?
Step Four = Self-assessment
 Below is a list of the Assessment criteria. These will be applied to this essay.
 A traffic light system is used. Red suggests danger – work is needed to reach
the appropriate standard. Amber represents an acceptable level of
performance. Green represents a good level of performance.
 Rows in the first column show the assessment criteria and its weighting for
this assessment. Thus Presentation/Structure/Referencing (25%) indicates
that evidence of a well organised and presented piece of work is supported by
correct refrencing is one of the criteria and it contributes to 25% of your total
mark for this essay.
 Columns 2 to 4 are used to describe the corresponding Red, Amber and
Green outcomes. Thus column 2 suggests that Red is awarded for “wrongly
formatted /or badly structured work with insufficient levels of reference”.
Column 3 suggests that Amber is awarded for “work with a reasonable
structure, in the correct format which is generally well referenced, with some
exceptions”. Column 4 shows that Green represents a “well- structured and
organised piece of work supported fully by strong referencing.
 A similar type of interpretation applies to the other three categories:
Research/Evidence/Interpretation; Knowledge and Understanding; and
Argument/Evaluation and Application.

these to the circumstances in the cases outlined. It is also intended to allow students to

Task 2: (60% marks)
The Concrete Masonry Corporation designs and manufactures pre-stressed concrete for the
building Industry for years; the company enjoyed a stable marketplace and a relatively
predictable business environment. Although there had been a boom in residential construction in
recent years, commercial work was on the decline. As a result, all the pre-stressed concrete
manufacturers were going further afield to big jobs. In order to survive, Concrete Masonry
Corporation was forced to bid on jobs previously thought to be out of their geographical area.
Survival depended upon staying competitive. However with the declining conditions of the
market and the evolution that had drastically changed the character of the market place, the
Concrete Masonry Corporation previously successful approach was now in question.
With the removal of trade barriers and other Globalized international trade agreements, the
Concrete Masonry Corporation found itself competing with other pre-stressed manufacturers
headquartered in countries around the world. A decision was then made to transfer several
manufacturing machines to a new site in Eastern Europe to allow more agility and efficiency
within their manufacturing supply.
The Project
The project was to include the transfer of 8 pre-stressed concrete assembly machines, along with
ancillary equipment into Eastern Europe. Scheduling the project had to take 6 months from
September before production must start to supply potential customers. A site had been selected
although the appointed Project Manager and potential team members had not visited the area,
nor did they understand the weather conditions of wind, rain and snow that prevailed in this area.
The assembly machines were to be transported by sea and then road haulage before arriving at
the new site. Road infrastructure was again an area that required attention.
Kevin Lewis
Kevin Lewis has been appointed as the Project manager for this installation transfer. He is a
29-year-old graduate of a well known University in the UK with a B.S.degree in Mechanical
Engineering. After graduation, he worked for five years in Engineering Design Industries. Although

he took a significant pay cut, he jumped at the opportunity to return to his home location with
Concrete Masonry Corporation. His job in Engineering Industries had been very demanding. The
long hours and extensive travelling had created tension in his marriage. He was looking forward to
a normal job with reasonable hours, or so he thought. While working in Engineering Design
Industries, Lewis worked on projects and installed new Engineering designs. He was confident that
he had the requisite technical expertise to excel at his new job with the Concrete Masonry
Corporation.
The Team
Lewis had a part-time team of five assistants on placement from the departments within Concrete
Masonry Corporation. At first, he was not sure how freely he could delegate work to the assistants
bearing in mind they also reported to other managers within the organisation. He quickly realised
that they were all very bright, competent workers who were anxious to leverage this project
experience into a lucrative career.
The project transfer has an investment of £900,000 pounds and is scheduled to take 6 months to
complete; taking into account, the project would be completed during the winter which would be
difficult. Lewis and his team would first need to visit the new location and start to consider the
project activities.
You are required to prepare a report concerning the main issues to be addressed by Kevin Lewis
from a project management perspective (2,500 words +/- 10%).
From a project management perspective base on Project life cycle outline the activities required
to be completed by Kevin Lewis to successfully implement this new initiative, e.g. Project Scope
Statement, Project Priorities (with a balanced trade-off and justification), Work Breakdown
Structure (with brief details of work packages) and Cost Estimation (with time-phased budget)
ensuring that it can operate on-time, and within budget. Kevin Lewis is only Project Managing the
transfer of equipment and not the actual facility building project. (Assume the building has
already been completed.)
Your report should be based on the four stages of Project life cycle and include examples of the
concerns, Project Life cycle stages, associated with managing the lifecycle of this major project.
Don’t forget to provide Network diagram, Gantt chart, cost appraisal methods and any other
relevant table or information as an Appendix; also any practical examples in relation to relevant
theories in Task 2 should be derived from the case study.
Assignment presentation and assessment
The answers to both tasks are independent and should be addressed separately.

Foreign Policy Analysis

ASSESSMENT
Assessment will comprise two strands, formative (non-assessed) and summative (assessed).
The formative component comprises an opportunity to receive feedback by submitting an essay outline (no more than 1,000 words). Students are encouraged to provide short outlines for one of the two essays. Plans should be no more than two sides of A4 in 12 point Times New Roman (or similar), and emailed to the lecturer at least ten days prior to the essay submission deadline. Outlines that meet these criteria will be read and returned with comments. Draft essays will not be read.
The final mark for the course is unaffected by submission of essay outlines. It is, however, a valuable opportunity to receive feedback on your work, which may assist you in writing the essays.
The summative assessment comprises two essays of 2500 words each. Each essay is worth 50% of the final grade.
The first essay is due the Monday of Week 6, 17 February. It will consist of a critical evaluation of the recommended readings for one week of the student’s choosing from Weeks 1-5. Students must not merely summarize the readings, but must discuss and analyse their contrasting arguments in light of each other and assess the evidence each reading offers. This critical assessment must cover at least Five of the recommended readings for one week.
The essay can address the following questions:
What are the main arguments and/or main findings of the readings?
What are the strengths and weaknesses of each argument?
What kinds of assumptions underpin these arguments? What is taken for granted or unspoken that the authors accept unproblematically?
What kind of evidence do the authors present? Is it persuasive? Why or why not?
Does the evidence presented support the argument?
Is there another way to interpret the evidence that differs from the author’s interpretation?
Are there other kinds of evidence that would better supplement the argument?
Are there any policy implications of the argument?
This is not meant to be an exhaustive inventory of issues that the essay should address, but it should get you started. In terms of organization, the essay should have a brief introductory paragraph (a “road map” of the essay telling the reader, in broad terms, what s/he is about to read) and a brief concluding paragraph.
The second essay is due on 27 April. It must address one of the essay questions listed below. The essay may draw upon the required readings, but importantly MUST also draw from at least five of the suggested/recommended readings.

Based on a review of the leadership literature it could be argued that sustainability
leadership – or more precisely, leadership for sustainability – is not a separate school of
leadership thought, but a particular blend of leadership characteristics applied within a
definitive context. The Cambridge University Sustainability Leadership Institute offers a
definition of sustainability leaders suggesting they are individuals who are compelled to
make a difference by deepening their awareness of themselves in relation to the world

result in innovative sustainable solutions. This would suggest that sustainability leadership is
implicitly about creating change.
You must prepare a 2000 word essay. This is a strict word count (no overage allowed). Using
the above commentary as a starting point, identify a prominent sport figure and critically
analyse if they can be considered a sustainability leader. This should be done using
numerous academic and industry references to appropriately justify your positions
throughout the document. Your selection of sport person to analyse should be cleared with
the module tutor for this assessment.
