The United States is increasingly seen as inadequately assisting
less-advantaged members of its society with a “hand-up” out of poverty. This failure is thought to underlie its large and growing levels of economic inequality. Within the last few decades a comprehensive body of empirical, cross-national evidence has demonstrated that the United States has one of the largest percentages of citizens living in poverty among the world’s industrialized countries. In this conference I want you to conduct cross-national research in which you seek out, analyze and describe poverty policies in other affluent societies that are seen to be successful, and to assess their possible relevance for reducing poverty and inequality in U.S. society. How are other societies addressing this problem? What can be learned from them?

-Read Peter Edelman’s (2012) So Rich, So Poor: Why is it so hard to end poverty in America?
-Examine the position of the United States in the following web sitescontaining cross-national comparisons of the percent of population living in poverty
