Gender Identity

There has been a large escalation in the awareness given to transgender individuals and groups. Transgender is defined as a person having a sense of identity as a male or female that conflicts with one’s biological sex and identify strongly with the other sex. The term transgender can describe anyone whose gender identity differs from their sex at birth. A transgender woman lives as a woman today, but was thought to be male when she was born. A transgender man lives as a man today, but was thought to be female when he was born. Some transgender people identify as neither male nor female, or as a combination of male and female. There are a variety of terms that people who aren’t entirely male or entirely female use to describe their gender identity, like non-binary or gender queer. According to the National Center for Transgender Equality less than 1 percent of the general population identifies as transgender.

The growing controversy is centered around the number of younger children that are being identified as transgender, some as early as six years old. Some researchers have argued that children as young as three are able to distinguish their gender dysphoria. Currently the treatment for young children that are experiencing gender dysphoria are hormonal treatments around the age of 11 that suppresses the onset of puberty and the development of secondary sex characteristics. This in essence buys them some time to decide if they want to go through more extensive transformative hormone therapy usually around age 16 and possibly later sexual reassignment surgery. Some doctors argue that it is too much too soon stating, “There is far from any certainty that being gender affirming is in the best interest of the child,” he said. “You’re actually pushing the child in the direction of irreversible body transformations.”

My question to you is this. What is your opinion regarding the hormone treatment to suppress the onset of puberty in young children that are experiencing gender dysphoria?
