Suppose that you are investigating where there is any race difference in occupational prestige that people have. You hypothesize that whites have more prestigious occupations than other ethnic groups and that African Americans tend to have less prestigious occupations than any other ethnic group. To test for this hypothesis, you are using the General Social Survey data (the data GSS2000 is available at the class Moodle). The occupational prestige variable is PRESTG80, and respondent’s ethnicity is measured by RACE. RACE is coded by 1 for white, 2 for black, and 3 for other. So, you have to test for the mean occupational prestige difference between White and Black, between White and Other, and between Black and Other.
