Hello,

This is a two part questions. First I will need the discussion question answer which will be below in bold, 250 words APA format. For those response I will need two responses of at least 175 words each.

Discussion Question 5 – Vulnerabilities in SMS cont.

Conduct a web search to find the cell phone provider’s sms through email – email address.

  1. Compose an email on your PC email and send it to your phone. Check to see if you got it.
  2. Create an alert to send an email to your phone when you receive an email on your PC.
  3. Share your experience with your class in this discussion board.

Part two

Student one:

Sending texts via email (and vice versa) are awesome ways to improve daily communications among workgroups, friends, family, and even yourself. On a personal note, I’ve been doing this for quite some time; I can remind myself to look up lyrics to a song I just heard, pick up something from the store, or even to turn in my assignments on time!

My provider is T-Mobile, and all I need to do is create an email with a short subject line and a short message or reminder in the body, and I address it to “##########@tmomail.net”. Replace the #s with an actual phone number (you can send it to your friends as well). Every provider has its own syntax for this process, here are some of the major providers:

  • AT&T: phonenumber@txt.att.net
  • T-Mobile: phonenumber@tmomail.net
  • Sprint: phonenumber@messaging.sprintpcs.com
  • Verizon: phonenumber@vtext.com or phonenumber@vzwpix.com
  • Virgin Mobile: phonenumber@vmobl.com
  • (Martin, 2018)

With every carrier I’ve ever had (except the “way back in the day” ones…) I have been able to type a text like normal, but put my personal email in the “to / recipient” field and I would get an email with my text message in it.

Per the topic instructions, I have just tested both methods, and they both worked. As stated, I send myself little “to-do” notes all the time so I already knew this.

Regarding the bit of “sending an email to my phone when I receive an email on the PC”: like every other person on the planet (just about), I have my email and apps synced between my phone and PC. When I receive an email, I can access it anywhere and I receive the appropriate alerts.

Any mail application using IMAP can handle this (POP3 will delete the message from the server once accessed on one device – but POP3 isn’t widely used anymore regardless).

Everything discussed in this topic can also be handled with applications and browser extensions. For instance, my tablet does not have inherent ‘texting’ capabilities, but I can utilize an APP from the app store and send/ receive texts through those means.

Student two:

So, I’m a T-Mobile subscriber, and I found that their format to accomplish the email-to-text was “phonenumber@tmomail.net”. Obviously, the phone number section is the phone number of the subscriber you wish to send the message to. It comes through relatively quickly. I have alerts on my phone to notify me when an e-mail comes through, and Im assuming most people likely have this on their phone these days anyway, I feel like its probably pretty common place.

The experience I had finding out how to do this.. well, as with most things of this nature, Google will provide! A quick Google search led me to the address that I needed in order to send e-mail-to-text for my specific provider. You place the address into the appropriate section, fill out the rest of the information you prefer, add your message to the body and then send it away. It’s a neat feature available to users; I don’t see a lot of practicality in its use as a main method of communication, but I can certainly see a usage case given the right circumstances.

In my mind, this is a great tool to use for smishing. Email on your phone is convenient, helpful in on-the-go situations etc, but when it comes to heavier use and composition, the laptop/desktop is going to be the much better option. If an attacker were able to get their hands on a list of cell phone numbers, this service could allow an attacker to utilize this vector as a means to send mass texts by way of an e-mail platform thats a bit more conducive to scale.
