In an analytical summary, you analyze sources as a text, which means you view a text as something written by a person and not just a collection of facts and information. As you write your summary, you need to imagine an audience that is not familiar with the text you will discuss. Use your analysis of this text to teach your audience about what the author is doing with this text and why she is doing it.

Use 600-800 words to include the following elements:

  • Part 1:
    A rhetorical analysis that contains:
    • the author’s name, the title, and the genre of the text
    • the main focus in the text (object of study)
    • what the author hoped to accomplish with the text (purpose)
    • the group of people that this text is intended for and the ways the author identifies and caters to that audience (audience/relevance)
    • the motivation behind creating the text (problem/exigence)
    • a big idea the author develops throughout the text (theme/key concept)
  • Part 2:
A linguistic analysis of the use of subjects or verbs by the author and provide:
  • at least two examples from the text
  • an explanation for each example of why the author uses that language feature/pattern. Consider and answer one of the following questions:
  • Part 3:
Compare and contrast the use of subjects or verbs in the current text with that same language pattern in another class text.
    • Explain how the authors use subjects or verbs differently in each text
    • Provide specific examples from each text
    • How is the use of subjects or verbs connected to one of the rhetorical elements of the text?
    • Analyze why you think a particular difference exists in each type of text (genre)
