Week 4 – Discussion

5 5 unread replies. 5 5 replies.

Your initial discussion thread is due on Day 3 (Thursday) and you have until Day 7 (Monday) to respond to your classmates. Your grade will reflect both the quality of your initial post and the depth of your responses. Refer to the Discussion Forum Grading Rubric under the Settings icon above for guidance on how your discussion will be evaluated.

Do Juvenile Delinquency Diversion Programs Work? [WLOs: 1, 2] [CLOs: 1, 4, 5]

Prior to starting this discussion, please read Chapters 6 and 7 in your textbook, watch the Columbine: Understanding Why (Links to an external site.) video, and read the Dylan Klebold Diversion (Links to an external site.) and Eric Harris Diversion (Links to an external site.) juvenile diversion program papers.

Your initial post should be at least 250 words in length. Please elaborate on the following:

  • Your textbook covers primary and secondary types of juvenile delinquency diversion programs. Briefly examine each type and provide an example of each.
  • Klebold and Harris had contact with the criminal justice system prior to the Columbine shooting. Based on your textbook readings on theories of aggression, what, if anything, did you see in the video and/or read in the diversion papers that may have provided a clue as to the boys’ later aggressive and violent behavior?
  • In your opinion, supported by scholarly and/or credible sources, was there anything the juvenile justice system missed or could have done better that may have prevented the Columbine massacre from happening? Keep in mind that there are not always clear warning signs and not all tragedies are preventable. However, what insight, if any, was gleaned from the Columbine tragedy about the nature of aggression and delinquent behavior?

Guided Response: Review several of your peers’ initial posts and, in a minimum of 100 words each, respond to at least two of your classmates’ posts by Day 7. Be sure to provide constructive feedback; ask follow-up questions to your peers regarding their assessment as to whether Klebold’s and Harris’ violent behavior could have been predicted. Are your classmates’ responses supported by scholarly, credible evidence or mere speculation? Gently remind those who speculate that in academic work, opinions must be supported by credible and/or scholarly evidence. Respond in a substantive manner with specific examples to extend their thinking. Support your claims with examples from the required materials and/or other scholarly or credible sources, and properly cite any references. You are encouraged to post your required replies earlier in the week to promote more meaningful and interactive discourse in this discussion forum. Continue to monitor the discussion forum until 5:00 p.m. (Mountain Time) on Day 7, and respond with robust dialogue to anyone who replies to your initial post.
