Annotated Bibliography:

Annotated Bibliography for Aging and Family Dynamics

Overview: A bibliography is a list of all cited sources in the research paper. In American Psychological Association (APA) style papers, bibliographies are called “References,” and they consist of alphabetically ordered lists of sources cited in a paper. The annotated bibliography is a list of sources with summaries and commentary that you might use to develop a research paper, literature review, or rely on as part of your discipline’s knowledge base. Annotated bibliographies are excellent tools for sharing the results of research with peers, and for demonstrating your own competence reading, interpreting and evaluating the literature in your discipline or research area. In this assignment, you will develop a 1,600-1,800-word summary/evaluative annotated bibliography for five peer reviewed journal articles on a topic related to this class (e.g., elder abuse, age-related discrimination, aging in place, grandparents caring for their children, caring for frail elders, etc.). The Human Services Program at FSCJ uses APA style for all research papers, manuscripts, projects, etc. Note that the APA does not have strict guidelines for the annotated bibliography. However, this assignment requires you to reference the APA manual for formatting the following elements:

• Title page • Abstract • Citations (in-text, and complete end of text references) • Headings • References page

Please be aware that there are many different types of annotated bibliographies—some are simple lists with one or two descriptive sentences, while others are full paragraphs. We will use the latter format for this paper. See the provided sample of an Annotated Bibliography.

There are three stages for this assignment. Each stage is graded separately. The instructions, requirements, and rubrics are provided below. Be sure to refer to the grading rubric for the specific types of comments you need to include.

Stage 1: Selecting Journal Articles (15 Points) Instructions: All articles must come from FSCJ’s databases and must be approved by your instructor. All must relate to the material covered in this class.

In order to help you locate appropriate sources, please use the Do & Don’t guidelines below:

DO DON’T

• Access the FSCJ’s Library and Learning Commons and use appropriate search terms, such as “financial elder abuse,” “age-related discrimination,” or “aging in

• Use books, book reviews, review articles, meta-analytic reviews, editorials, Wikipedia, blogs, or websites.

2

place,” or “grandparents raising their grandchildren.” Pick one topic only for your review.

• Be sure to narrow your search to peer reviewed journals. Pay attention to the purposes, participants, variables, and implications of the study.

• Use social work, psychology, and sociology journals only.

• Keep track of the exact key words you use to search for your articles and databases in which your articles are cataloged.

• Note that the advanced search function may require you to put part of your search terms in quotes. When you locate the article, make a note of the database.

• Select current articles that published in the last ten years.

• Use an article containing the word “review” and/or “meta-analytic review” in the title or the abstract.

Grading: There is no rubric for this stage. You will receive either a Pass or Not pass grade. If you get a Pass, you will also get 15 points. You must revise your list if you get a Not Pass grade. Each revision equals a 2-point deduction. Submission: Type your proposed list of articles in a Word document and order the list of references in alphabetical order. Be sure to include the database in which each article is cataloged. Submit the document through the online assignment submission.

Stage 2: Title and Reference Page (35 Points) Instructions: You are required to submit a title page for your annotated bibliography and a reference page. Both pages must be formatted in APA style. Please reference your APA manual appropriately. Be sure to include a proper title and running head. The title must be highly specific and descriptive. For example, Annotated Bibliography of Current Research on Elder Abuse, would be an appropriate title. The reference page must include reference information for five peer reviewed articles on one of the assigned topics in correct APA style. Each entry must be correctly formatted, and the entries should be alphabetical order. Grading: See the rubric for grading criteria. Submission:

Research Methods: PH4160 Research Methods and Technical Writing for Public Health

Week 4 Written Assignment

Answer all questions below and be prepared to share your answers and discuss them during the next class. Do NOT copy and paste sentences from the textbook or any other sources. Always paraphrase your answers and write in full sentences with proper grammar and spelling. Only complete answers will earn credit.

1. Chapter 11: Cohort Studies

First, read Chapter 11 sections 11.1 and 11.2 (textbook 2nd edition). Next, review Figures 11-3 and 11-4.

Now read the following description:

“From January 2022 through December 2022, a researcher collects baseline data on all newborn infants born at Dignity Health (CA Hospital Medical Center). This means that the researcher utilizes rolling admission for recruitment of participants into this study. The baseline data that are collected include birth weight, blood spot screening, pulse oximetry screening, and hearing screening*. When each of the infants turn one year old (i.e., 12 months from their baseline timepoint), they will return to the hospital for follow-up health screening, during which the researcher will collect follow up data on the infants’ health.”

Question 1.A. : Based on the description above, which type of cohort study was it (retrospective, prospective or longitudinal)? Explain why you think so.

Question 1.B. : Based on the description above, is the cohort of Dignity Health infants considered a fixed population or a dynamic populationExplain why you think so.

*For more information on newborn screening, see Newborn Screening Process | Newborn Screening (hrsa.gov)

2. Chapter 12: Experimental Studies

You have been tasked with designing the randomization of participants for a clinical trial. This study will test the effect of a new drug versus a placebo. You have a pool of 100 participants (60 women and 40 men).

For block randomization and stratified randomization, come up with an idea on how you would randomize the 100 participants into either the drug or placebo groups. You can design any hypothetical scenario. Explain your reasoning for each of your idea based on your understanding of the different types of randomization (see textbook Chapter 12.6 and Figure 12-7). The example for simple randomization is provided below.

Type of Randomization How would you randomize the 100 participants in this method Reasoning
Simple randomization Example:

I would use a random number generator to randomly assign each participant to either the drug group or placebo group. If there are 100 participants in total, then the allocation should be 50 persons in the drug group and 50 persons in the placebo group.

Example:

Simple randomization is the simplest and most straightforward form of randomization and does not take into account any participant characteristics. The allocation is purely by random chance at the individual level.

3. Chapter 13: Qualitative Studies

The following is an Abstract from a study published in the journal BMC Health Services Research. Read the abstract and answer the question below it.

Background

Methods

We conducted focus groups with 39 smokers aged 21–75 from the most socio-economically deprived areas of Nottingham UK who had made an unsuccessful attempt to quit within the last year without using smoking cessation services, to identify specific barriers or motivators to gaining access to these services.

Results

Barriers to use of existing services related to fear of being judged, fear of failure, a perceived lack of knowledge about existing services, a perception that available interventions – particularly Nicotine Replacement Therapy – are expensive and ineffective, and negative media publicity about bupropion. Participants expressed a preference for a personalized, non-judgmental approach combining counselling with affordable, accessible and effective pharmacological therapies; convenient and flexible timing of service delivery, and the possibility of subsidized complementary therapies.

Conclusion

We conclude that smokers from these deprived areas generally had low awareness of the services available to help them, and misconceptions about their availability and effectiveness. A more personalized approach to promoting services that are non-judgmental, and with free pharmacotherapy and flexible support may encourage more deprived smokers to quit smoking.

Question : If you are a researcher on this study, what would be two questions that you would ask the participants of the focus groups in this study? Remember, this is a qualitative study, which means that the questions would be open-ended in format. Ask your questions such that they solicit the best possible answers from your participants that would help you reach the goals of this study.

Organizational Structure Memo :GG Freightways (GGFRT) CIO Organizational Structure Memo Paper

Before you begin this assignment, be sure you have read the “GG Freightways Case Study,” as well as all materials in the course to date. You will also need to review any feedback you received on your IT Strategic Plan #2 assignment.

Purpose of this Assignment

This assignment gives you the opportunity to demonstrate your ability to apply the course concepts to address the organizational changes needed to evolve the information technology (IT) department into a true CIO organization to support the GG Freightways (GGFRT). This assignment specifically addresses the following course outcome to enable you to:

· explain the roles and responsibilities of an information technology department to support an organization’s IT strategy

CIO Organizational Structure Memo

For this assignment, you will assume the role of the Chief Information Officer (CIO) at GGFRT (i.e., you are Lance). Since you are GGFRT’s first CIO, the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) has asked you for a plan for the organizational changes you need to make. One of the first things you realize is that the organization that exists is just an ‘IT Department’ and you know that what GGFRT needs and has hired you to create an organization that fulfills the broad responsibilities of a Chief Information Officer. You know that your proposal needs to be convincing to the CFO in order for you to get the resources you need.

Assignment

You will develop a memorandum addressed to the CFO that explains how you want to change your IT Department into a CIO organization and why. Your memo will address each of the topics listed below, and should be written so that it flows well from one section to the next. In addition to the course materials, at least one external resource (resource other than those provided in the class) must be used. Two or more cited references will earn top credit. Use a separate References page to list just the references you have cited. Remember to use the APA formatting rules and correctly cite and reference your sources with APA format. Use the Grading Rubric to be sure you have covered everything.

Please include the following in your memorandum, ensuring that each section flows well to the next, and that the overall memo creates a compelling justification for your new organizational structure.

1. Introduction and Purpose – Open your memo with a brief (2 or 3 sentences) explanation of why you are writing it. For the introduction, provide some background on the current inefficiencies in the IT Department; thus, the need for reorganization. For the purpose, you are writing to the CFO who must approve the organizational changes.

2. Leadership Philosophy & Management Style – Since you are the CIO and a member of the senior leadership team of GGFRT, it is important for the other members of the team to understand your (1 ) leadership philosophy and (2) the management style (e.g., Participative, Autocratic, Laissez Faire, etc.) you will use to meet the company’s needs. This should be a short paragraph for each section that ties to the priorities and/or issues outlined in the Case Study and lays the foundation for the organizational structure you will propose below. Refer to course readings and presentations on leadership. This is also a good area in which to do some external research for specific leadership qualities and a management style you will utilize. This is your leadership philosophy and management style, so should not be written from the company and/or department perspective.

3. Internal IT Strategies – To show how your CIO organization will support GGFRT, you will present and explain three (3) internal IT strategies. For Part 2 of your IT Strategic Plan, you provided at least one (1) example of an internal IT strategy. Identify your internal IT strategy from the ITSP #2 assignment, then add two (2) more internal IT strategies, so that you have a total of three (3). The strategies you develop must address people, process and technology – one strategy for each. Describe each of the three strategies, identify if they address people, process or technology and explain how they will help improve the organization’s effectiveness. Refer to the “Creating a Future Vision for the Chief Information Officer” from Week 2 for an explanation of internal and external (business-enabling) IT strategies. A short introductory paragraph should be included before the table’s content. An IT strategy is not the accomplishment of a business objective as that has a business, not IT focus.

Please use the following table, copying/pasting it into your assignment (add lines if needed):

Internal IT Strategy/Description

People, Process, or Technology (state which one or more is applicable) Explanation of how this IT Strategy will Help Improve the Organization’s Effectiveness
Example: do not use but leave it in the table when completing this section.

Meet compliance requirements by updating current technology or developing/acquiring new technology to meet these various mandates (only one would be chosen from the business strategic objective from ITSP #1).

Technology By updating the Finance/Accounting System to Precise Financials (to meet SOX requirements), updating current or developing a new Fleet Maintenance System, notification on 10K mandated vehicle safety checks will be timelier, developing technology to capture driver hours, the company will be more proactive in their scheduling of vehicles and drivers in their operations which results in a more efficient day-to-day operations.

4. Current IT Department Structure – Use the information provided in the Case Study to draw an organization chart depicting the current roles and responsibilities of only the 25 IT Department personnel. You may take some liberties in how you align the staff that is described in the Case Study, but all IT staff positions or groups must be included in the structure. Be sure to introduce or explain your organizational chart in the section’s introduction. Refer to course materials for an example of an IT organization chart. You may use the Shapes tool or the SmartArt tool to develop your organizational hierarchy chart, or you may paste in your chart from another drawing tool. Be sure that everyone listed on the chart is placed correctly in relation to whom they report and the people who report to them.

5. New CIO Organization – Explain in a paragraph or two how a CIO Organization is different from an IT Department. Included should be the (1) goals/responsibilities of an IT Department, (2) goals/responsibilities of a CIO Organization, and then (3) the differences between them. Integrate examples from the case study in your response . Be sure to create a transition from the previous section. This may be an area for you to do some external research (a reference should be provided for more credit).

6. Key Services – List and explain three (3) key services (personnel, sub-departments of the CIO Organization) that need to be included in your new CIO organizational structure. You may eliminate functions or positions from your current organizational structure if you believe it will improve your effectiveness and/or efficiency; these should be explained. You should also add (and explain) any functions that you will need in your new CIO organization. Be sure these services are appropriate to your IT strategies (section #3) and note how each relates in your discussion.

Please use the following table, copying/pasting it into your assignment (add lines if needed):

Key Service State IT Strategy (section #3) /Key Service’s Relationship to IT Strategy
Example: do not use but leave it in the table when completing this section.

Addition to the IT staff of a Compliance Officer

Meet compliance requirements by updating current technology or developing/acquiring new technology to meet those mandates. By adding this position, it will oversee any projects/personnel that would be involved on any projects where compliance mandates are being implemented to ensure that all mandate requirements are covered in the software.

7. New CIO Organization Structure – Briefly explain what changes you will make and why. Draw an organization chart depicting your new CIO organizational structure . Be sure that the key services you listed are covered by the new organizational structure. Be sure that everyone listed on the chart is placed correctly in relation to whom they report and the people who report to them. (Follow the guidelines for drawing the organization chart given above for the current organization.)

8. Key Milestones – Your memo should include three (3) key milestones (tasks or events) associated with accomplishing the changes that you see are needed to change the IT Department into a CIO organization. Each milestone should be briefly described (in a sentence or two) and a target completion date should be shown. In addition, for each milestone you should identify at least one issue or concern you have with accomplishing it. One example using a milestone not related to the organization might be: The milestone is to consolidate all servers into a new data center by February 2021. Some issues might be: (1) a secure data center must be located, (2) it will require significant downtime for the corporate servers, and (3) the initial cost will be high. An example related to the case study is presented below. Consider that the changes begin today; your milestones should be dated in the future. Please ensure you list the key milestones in chronological order (excluding the example). *chronological order refers to steps that follow one another in time (e.g., one must purchase a server before it is used).

Please use the following table, copying/pasting it into your assignment (add lines if needed):

Key Milestone Target Completion Date (list in chronologic order) Issue(s)/Concerns Accomplishing the Milestone
Example: do not use but leave it in the table when completing this section.

Hiring of the Compliance Officer

October 31, 2020 Finding a person with the correct skill set with a thorough understanding of both IT and the various agencies’ compliance requirements may be difficult

9. Conclusion – Provide an appropriate closing to your memo. It should summarize some of the key points in the various sections as well as include a statement or two of follow-up with the CFO.

Formatting Your Assignment

· Avoid quotation where possible by paraphrasing ideas and findings from your sources into both your own words and writing style. Changing a few words but including most of the wording and structure from the original text of your sources is not acceptable. Verbatim text directly from sources is not acceptable, even if cited. The work of the ideas and the writing needs to be your own. If you do use verbatim text, you must use quotation marks even if you have cited the source.

· Formatting: 1” margins, 12-point Times New Roman font. Use memo format for this assignment; you can find memo templates in Word.

· In the CIO Memo assignment, you are preparing the document based on the feedback from the second assignment and scoring rubric. However, you don’t need to include Parts 1 and 2 in this submission.

· Continue to use a title page from the ITSP #1 assignment that includes: The company name, title of assignment, your name, Course and Section number and date.

· Use outline format in the assignment instructions above, for these sections:

1. Introduction and Purpose

2. Leadership Philosophy

a. Leadership Philosophy:

b. Management Style:

3. Internal IT Strategies

4. Current IT Department Structure

5. New CIO Organization

· Write a short, concise paper: Use the recommendations provided in each area for length of response. It’s important to value quality over quantity.

· Content areas should be double spaced; table entries should be single spaced.

· To copy a table : Move your cursor to the table, then click on the small box that appears at the upper left corner of the table to highlight the table; right click and COPY the table; put the cursor in your paper where you want the table and right click and PASTE the table.

· Ensure that each of the tables is preceded by an introductory sentence that explains what is contained in the table (if required in that specific section), so the reader understands why the table has been included.

1. Use at least two resources with APA formatted citation and reference. Any course content should be from the class reading content, not the assignment instructions or case study itself. For information on APA format, refer to Content>Course Resources>Writing Resources.

· Use a Reference Page for resources required for this assignment. Use APA format for your reference page.

· Running headers are not required for this report; however, please use page numbers.

· Compare your work to the Grading Rubric below to be sure you have met content and quality criteria.

· Submit your paper as a Word document, or a document that can be read in Word. Keep tables in Word format – do not paste in graphics.

· The format of the assignment must be completed in MS Office Memo format. Use a template from Word to start this assignment.

· Your submission should include your last name first in the filenameLastname_Firstname_CIO Memo

The “right” and “wrong” answers have to do with whether or not you correctly incorporated the course concepts and vocabulary from the course materials and addressed all parts of the assignment. The organizational structure you propose is not as important as that it makes sense in light of the course content and the Case Study. Use the Rubric below to be sure you have covered all aspects of the assignment.

Multitude of Nutrition Information:Assignment 1 (Sections A & B):

Section A of this assignment will help you learn to critically analyze the multitude of nutrition information found in the media to determine what has merit and what is nutritional quackery. Section B will also help you learn how to assess your diet compared to Canada’s Food Guide.

You will be submitting both a Microsoft Word document and a Microsoft Excel document, as well as a copy of article from Section A into the assignment 1 submission folder on the Moodle. You are only allowed one drop box submission, so ensure that all files are attached before you click on the submit button.

Policy for Late Assignments: 10% of the total marks will be subtracted for each day that the assignment is late (i.e. 10% for 1 day late, 20% for 2 days late, 30% for 3 days late, etc.). If you are unable to complete the assignment due to medical reasons (medical certificate required), compassionate reasons, please contact the instructor (send an email), preferably before the due date.

Weight of assignment 1 = 12.5%

Directions:

Include the following with your assignment:

Title Page: Include a title page with your name, student number, course name and section, instructor’s name and date. [1 mark]

Reference list: include the items referenced in your assignment in APA format (as a minimum, everyone should have the article, the textbook (or course notes), and the Canada’s Food Guide website listed). [1 mark]

A. Analyzing Dietary/Nutritional Claims

You will be given a link to an article via email. You will critique this article only. If you critique an article that was not sent to you via email, it will be concluded that you have copied the assignment from someone. In such a case, a disciplinary action may be taken against you. Please email your instructor if you have not received an article link by Feb 5, @ 2 PM. But check the spam folder of your email first.

A copy of the online article must be submitted with your assignment (include a screen shot of the article, a picture of the article or copy and paste the article into a Microsoft Word document. A weblink to the article does not count[1 mark].

Write a critique (in point form) about this article. Include the following information:

a. Describe the dietary or nutritional claim made in your article [1 mark].

b. Discuss whether or not this article has the characteristics of valid nutrition information or whether it has the characteristics of nutrition quackery with direct links to your course readings and provide specific examples of each characteristic from your article [6 marks – 1 mark per characteristic with example from your article]. (e.g. “The claim in the article is ‘too good to be true’: the article promises weight loss while you eat chocolate cake everyday”). Consult your course notes for Unit 1 and the corresponding chapter in your textbook, specifically:

· Consumer Corner: Reading Nutrition News with an Educated Eye

· Controversy Unit 1: Sorting the Imposters from the Real Nutrition Experts

– Figure: Earmarks of Nutrition Quackery

– Table: Is this Site Reliable?

c. Clearly state your conclusion (i.e. is your article an example of valid nutrition information or does it have the characteristics of nutrition quackery?) [1 mark].

Format and Style

Critique Formatting: approximately one-page double spaced (2 pages maximum, not counting reference list), and in point form (i.e. you do not need to write full sentences). The critique will be marked for spelling, grammar, and clarity (i.e. marks will be deducted for spelling errors, incorrect grammar, etc.). [1 mark]

B. Using Canada’s Food Guide to Evaluate your Diet

Note: Please keep an electronic copy of Section B of this assignment as you will need to use this information with Assignment 2.

1. a) Record your food and beverage intake for 2 days (record 1 weekday and 1 weekend day). Present the information in Microsoft Excel Create a new sheet for each day and provide a Total Row (with formulas) for each of the three food groups, as well as Other [11 marks].

Document the following information:

· when you ate (the date and time),

· where you ate (the location),

· what you ate and drank (include as much detail as possible),

· how much you ate (be as specific with the amount of food as possible and record all food amounts as cups),

· how you ate (e.g. slow, fast, distracted, with others, etc.)

· why you ate (e.g. hungry, food was offered, went out with friends, etc.). Read through the “Be Mindful of Your Eating Habits” section on the Canada Food Guide website for more information: https://food-guide.canada.ca/en/healthy-eating-recommendations/be-mindful-of-your-eating-habits/

· classify which food group the foods you ate/drank was part of (Vegetables & Fruits, Whole Grain Foods or Protein Foods, or if it did not fit into a food group, classify in the “Other” column. Water, plain coffee, and plain tea should be classified in the “Water, plain coffee, tea” column).

Notes:

The number you will enter under the food group is the amount of cups consumed.

· Estimate the amounts of foods consumed very carefully (weigh or measure foods if possible). Use cups as the measurement for all foods (1 cup = 250 mL, ½ cup = 125 mL, 1 tsp = 5 mL = 1/48 cup, 1 Tbsp = 15 mL = 1/16 cup) and be consistent throughout the assignment.

· The following video discusses how you can use your hand to estimate the amount of food consumed: http://www.unlockfood.ca/en/Videos/Food-Portions-Toolkit/Video-Size-up-your-food-portions.aspx

· Specify brand names, preparation/cooking methods, etc. Include as much detail as possible for the foods / beverages that you consumed (you will need this detail for Assignment 2).

· For beverages, include water consumption for assessment of your fluid intake

· You may use Microsoft Excel or open source google sheets.

· Additional supports for how to create tables in Excel and how to create a Total Row can be found at: https://support.office.com/en-us/article/Video-Create-and-format-tables-bf0ce08b-d012-42ec-8ecf-a2259c9faf3f?ui=en-US&rs=en-US&ad=US. See specifically: Add a Total row to a table

· There is an example of what your excel workbook should look like on UM Learn. I will show in the class how to carry out these basic function on the Excel.

1. b) Within your Excel spreadsheet, create a Totals sheet to evaluate the adequacy of your diet according to the recommendations from Canada’s Food Guide. Present your information in a Table [2 marks] and then use this information to create a 2-D Pie Chart in Excel [2 marks]. Copy your Total Row number from each of the two days for each food group into your Totals sheet. Compute an Average formula [=AVERAGE(B2:C2)] to determine the average intake each day. Generate a 2-D Pie Chart using the data from columns A and D. There is a tutorial on how to do this on the University of Manitoba’s library site: http://libguides.lib.umanitoba.ca/computerproblems/microsoftexcel titled: “How to Create Graphs or Charts in Excel 2010”.

2. a) State whether your plate met the proportions recommended on the Eat Well Plate for Vegetables and Fruits, Whole Grain Foods and Protein Foods. Use 5% as the acceptable variance from the recommendation (so if your Vegetable & Fruit intake is 45%, Whole Grain Foods is 28% and Protein Foods intake is 27%, for example, then the recommendations are met since no group is off by more than 5%). For each food group, list two specific changes that you could make to so that the proportions would better match those on the Eat Well Plate. If you already met the proportions for all of the food groups, list two food choices from each food group that you ate that allowed you to meet the proportions recommended on the Eat Well Plate. [4.5 marks]

Food Group

Proportions met? Recommended Changes
Vegetables and Fruits

Whole Grain Foods

Protein Foods

b) For each of the food groups, choose 1 specific recommendation that Canada’s Food Guide (CFG) makes regarding that food group and then discuss one change that you could make to your diet to meet this recommendation in the future. [4.5 marks] Note: you can find the recommendations for the specific food groups in the CFG links in the course notes.

Food Group One CFG Recommendation Recommended Change
Vegetables and Fruits

Whole Grain Foods

Protein Foods

3. a) Choose one of the Mindful Eating practices from your 2-day food record (when you ate, where you ate, what you ate/drank, how you ate, or why you ate) and discuss how you feel it impacted your food intake for the 2 days that you recorded. [2 marks] Note: you can find the information about Mindful Eating practices in the CFG links in the course notes.

3. b) Compare your dietary intake on the weekday and weekend day that you recorded. Did your diet vary between these two days? Discuss why your diet was different on the weekday compared to the weekend day. [2 marks]

Cash Flows: Quiz 3 Cash Flows and Cost Volume Profit Analysis

Part One Cash Flows

Matthew Reedmer owns two Matthew’s Models stores in Florence, South Carolina. He believes that the stores have been successful and he wants to open a new store in Sumter about 30 miles west of Florence. Matt has been in the retail line for over 20 years, and he worked at his uncle’s hobby shop while in high school and college before starting his own store at the age of 25.

Two big secrets to a successful toy store operation are good location and product selection. Matt’s first store is located in downtown Florence. Since Matt had been born and raised in Florence, he attracted a good customer base that remained loyal to his store after some of the giant chain related toy stores began to move into the area. About 10 years ago, Matt saw the change in customer shopping habits and purchased a second store near an interchange to Interstate 95 in a rapidly growing retail area. Lots of new families had moved into the area, and Matt could not totally rely on the “good old boy” market alone to sustain his market share. This second store catered to the younger more mobile generation that shopped at or near malls.

Matt now was looking into other markets. Sumter was not located on the interstate, but the area was growing because of its proximity to the state capital of Columbia, which was just 30 miles to its west. Matt believed that the people of Sumter who commuted to work in Columbia would prefer to limit their driving for shopping activities to the immediate Sumter area. Also, since Matt was a respected citizen of Florence, his reputation as an honest businessman had spread to Sumter. He believed he could quickly build up a new customer base in that location. The big chain type stores also did not seem as interested in the Sumter area, preferring instead to locate in the larger metropolitan areas of Columbia and Florence.

The appropriate toy items to feature in his stores were very important. Matt felt that his area of influence was strictly regional, and he did not have to carry much of the standard inventory of the national chain type of toy stores. His toy lines were more a reflection of local interest; thus NASCAR related items were hot sellers. Matt’s clientele also seemed interested in computer action games and a new line of Ya’ll talking dolls.

Matt went to the Florence National Bank to inquire about funding for the new store location. He had found an abandoned furniture store in downtown Sumter along Main Street that was up for sale for $280,000. The store seemed to be the right size and at a good location. A grocery store was in the same block with ample off street parking. Matt brought his balance sheet for the last two years and an income statement for the last operating year to the bank to support his request for a retail loan of $250,000. (Copies of the financial statements are listed at the end of the quiz).

Nick Tightwad, the local bank loan vice president had been a friend of Matt’s for many years. He was a customer at Matt’s toy store on close out sales, and his bank had underwritten the funding for the second store. Nick was excited about Matt’s expansion goals and the prospect of another business loan with his friend. At the same time, Nick had to live up to his reputation. He was not about to approve a loan unless he was almost 100 percent sure that the borrower would not default. Matt’s past success had alleviated much of Nick’s concern, but he still wanted to complete a detailed analysis of the financial performance of Matthew’s Models during the last calendar year. Upon reviewing the balance sheet, Nick noticed a drop in cash during the last year even though Matt showed a strong profitable performance. The current financial statements did not seem to give enough information to answer Nick’s questions and he asked Matt to prepare a statement of cash flows for the year ending December 31, 20×7.

Part Two Cost Volume Profit Analysis

Lily Flowers is President of Lily Recreation which manufactures recreational equipment. One of the company’s products, a skateboard, sells for $40.00. The skateboards are manufactured in an antiquated plant that relies heavily on direct labor workers. The variable costs are high, totaling $24.00 per skateboard of which 60% is direct labor cost.

Over the past year the company sold 40,000 skateboards, with the following operating results:

Sales (40,000 skateboards) $1,600,000

Variable Expenses 960,000

Contribution Margin 640,000

Fixed Expenses 480,000

Net Operating Income 160,000

Management is anxious to maintain and perhaps even improve its present level of income from the skateboards.

Required

1. Compute the Contribution Margin ratio and the break-even point in skateboards.

2. Due to an increase in labor rates, the company estimates that variable costs will increase by $2 per skateboard next year. If this change takes place and the selling price per skateboard remains constant at $40.00, what will be the new Contribution margin ratio and the new break-even point in skateboards?

3. Refer to the data in (2) above. If the expected change in variable costs takes place, how many skateboards will have to be sold next year to earn the same net operating income, $160,000, as last year?

4. Refer again to the data in (2) above. Lily has decided that the company may have to raise the selling price of its skateboards. If Lily Recreation wants to maintain the same Contribution Margin ratio as last year, what selling price per skateboard must it charge next year to cover the increased labor costs?

5. Refer to the original data. Lily is considering the construction of a new, automated plant. The new plant would slash variable costs by 40%, but it would cause fixed cost to increase by 90%. If the new plant is built, what would be the company’s new Contribution Margin ratio and new break-even point in skateboards?

6. Refer to the data in (5) above.

a. If the new plant is built, how many skateboards will have to be sold next year to earn the same net operating income, $160,000, as last year?

b. Assume that the new plant is constructed and that next year the company manufactures and sells 40,000 skateboards (the same number as sold last year). Prepare a contribution format income statement.

c. If you were a member of top management, would you have been in favor of constructing the new plant? Explain.

ACADIA HEALTHCARE 2

Report on the strategic plan of your company. Reflect on how the strategic plan relates to the organizational structure, leadership, mission, vision and core values of the company. Discuss how strategic planning could benefit you as you engage your own personal economic life .

Strategic planning allows and assists an organization in identifying strategies that could be defined in each time frame within the organizational capacity for the execution. Acadia Healthcare has aimed at setting better standards for excellence in the treatment of addiction concerns and mental health (George, Walker & Monster, 2019). This assists the organization in making an exceptional commitment to different stakeholders such as communities, professional workers, staff, and others. Through my research I have understood that strategic planning of Acadia Healthcare enables the organization to execute better and effective stragies that are helpful in attaining the vision of the organization and stay compatible with the business environment. Strategic planning also impacts the leadership of Acadia healthcare and accordingly aligns the priorities of the organization accordingly.

Therefore, I have also understood that strategic planning would assist and allow Acadia Healthcare to be more proactive by setting up a better sense of direction. I have also understood that it increases the operational efficiency and this would assist Acadia Healthcare in increasing its market share and profitability in the long run (Ahmad & Ahmad, 2019). This would also help me in engage in more financial stability as well as identifying the purpose, exercising or implementing intention in achieving the required or set plan in order to accomplish the goals that I have set myself to achieve.

Feedback from Professor:

Strategic plans may be operationalized like improving or being proactive but the bottom line is they want to make a profit. We can improve efficiency and cut over head. We can expand and get new customers or sell more to existing customers. Go to their goals and objectives in their annual plans and tell us what their plan is.

A strategic plan is often conveyed to stockholders in their annual reports. That’s the goals and objectives that are set out. It may be a technology change to reduce overhead. Maybe sales goals? Integrity is one of those things that’s a necessity when your an insurance company. It’s not a strategic plan element. Think in terms of improving the bottom line. Only three choices, reduce overhead, aquire new customers or sell more products to existing customers. Maybe the bank is doing all of them.

American History: Historical Memory and the “Lost Cause”

The “Lost Cause” brings to mind a myriad of different feelings and nuances. At first glance, it is a history presented as an example of an underdog mentality, a romanticized missed opportunity that was the Civil War (as forwarded by Southern apologists). Eric Foner describes this period as a time at the end of Reconstruction that was governmental “abandonment of the dream of racial equality written into laws and the constitution in the 1860s and 70s.” “The Lost Cause” was in fact an interpretation of the American Civil War viewed by most historians as a myth, which attempts to preserve the honor of the South by casting the Confederate defeat in the best possible light. At the end of the 19th century, due to this revisionist historical angle, “in public literature and memoirs by participants, at veteran’s reunions and public memorials, the Civil War became remembered as a tragic family quarrel among white Americans in which black people played no significant part.”

How did this happen?! How, if historical literature is tied to critical evidence, can two sides of a conflict come to such different understandings of what happened and why it happened? Herein lies the difficulty of dealing with manipulations of history and how things are presented. This example is an egregious one (a highly fatal war), but this happens regularly in a number of different forms. It is our job as historians to parse through this in the interest of accurate objectivity in the field. Monuments are reflections of this history and how people try to control it.

In Education Weekly, Stephen Sawchuk posits this: “The monuments themselves tell two stories. On the one hand, it’s about Robert E. Lee. It’s also about what the people who put up the monument want you to believe about Robert E. Lee,” he said. “In suggesting history is being erased by removing these statues, what’s often missed is that monuments already erase history—by selecting what will be remembered and how it will be remembered.”

The assignment here is to understand the short clips and read the media source set to get an understanding about this issue. Peruse the excerpts of contemporary discussion of Confederate statues and the role history has played in contemporary representations of race and law in the US now. In a 500 word minimum write up, address the question below:

1. “America’s national identity is grounded in a shared understanding of American history—the country’s failures, successes, traditions, and ideals. Shape that narrative and you can shape a nation….” How do you think the protests and actions against these monuments have attempted to tell a different story about America’s “failures, successes, traditions and ideals”?

What new insights do you have about the role of images and the arts in the process of social change?
