Introduction

In your first three assessments, you applied new knowledge and insight gleaned from the literature, from organizational data, and from direct consultation with the patient, family, or group (and perhaps with subject matter and industry experts) to your assessment of the problem. You’ve examined the problem from the perspectives of leadership, collaboration, communication, change management, policy, quality of care, patient safety, costs to the system and individual, technology, care coordination, and community resources. Now it’s time to turn your attention to proposing an intervention (your capstone project), as a solution to the problem.

Preparation

In this assessment, you’ll develop an intervention as a solution to the health problem you’ve defined. To prepare for the assessment, think about an appropriate intervention, based on your work in the preceding assessments, that will produce tangible, measurable results for the patient, family, or group. In addition, you might consider using a root cause analysis to explore the underlying reasons for a problem and as the basis for developing and implementing an action plan to address the problem. Some appropriate interventions include the following:

· Creating an educational brochure.

· Producing an educational voice-over PowerPoint presentation or video focusing on your topic.

· Creating a teaching plan for your patient, family, or group.

· Recommending work process or workflow changes addressing your topic.

Plan to spend at least 3 direct practicum hours working with the same patient, family, or group.

In addition, you may wish to complete the following:

· Review the assessment instructions and scoring guide to ensure that you understand the work you will be asked to complete and how it will be assessed.

· Conduct sufficient research of the scholarly and professional literature to inform your work and meet scholarly expectations for supporting evidence.

and the Mexican War of 1846-1848, were both impactful on the Westward Expansion. The Westward Expansion was the idea of gaining as much land to provide for the United States population. When considering the two events, the Mexican American War would be most impactful. The war gained a larger amount of land, almost half of the land belonging to Mexico. The war allowed the United States to gain New Mexico and California and the border was established at the Rio Grande (OpenStax, 2019). The Independence of Texas did not gain land for the United States because the Texans wanted to be a slave state and the U.S did not want that. The Texas Independence led to the war with Mexico and was a stepping block to the “first large-scale success of the United States military force on foreign soil” (NCC Staff, 2022).

 

Manifest Destiny, the idea of White Americans taking over the land because it was a God given right. President Polk wanted to spread democracy over the continent and was willing to do whatever was necessary to do so, it was the Manifest Destiny mentality (NCC Staff, 2022).  With the Mexican American war, President Polk had every intention of gaining the land one way or another, declaring war by lying about the Mexican army invading the American soil (History.com, 2009). President Polk was also willing to gain Texas, even if it meant another slave state. Manifest Destiny, as John Gast’s painting conveys, the White Americans would move forward, pushing the Native Americans and Mexicans and their customs out of the United States lands.

Horizontal analysis is looking at data across time that is usually two or more periods. According to our book, there are two ways to perform horizontal analysis; comparing values over time and computing the percentage of change. Page 4-38

We would want to perform this analysis with the financial statements because it can indicate the health/ growth of a company. We can compare many different aspects to see what is the driving force of a number. For example, a company’s revenue is down from the last 3 years? Is the revenue less than last year? Are the expenses more than last year? Comparing across time helps tell the whole story of a company rather than just a look at a single period in time.

By doing a horizontal analysis, we can determine trends and also find outliers. These outliers can some times tell an interesting story. For example, a horizontal analysis that I like to do, is looking at different company’s stock price over 1 and 5 years. If there is a large dip in the stock price, I usually look up that company and the dates around it to see what happened. There is some times a story about the company or a world event that can explain it. During the year you can generally see when a company announced earnings because the price quickly rises or dips. For most companies, you can see a significant drop in stock price in March of 2020 due to Covid.

Example 2:

 

A horizontal analysis is the analysis of financial data over time. Comparing data over two or more consecutive periods assists in analyzing trends in company performance and predicting future performance. There are 2 ways to do this:

  • Compare the veritical analysis over time. Looking for changes year over year once the balance sheet or income statement is expressed in percentage terms allows us to look for trends or changes year over year. This helps to point out ares for further research to better understand unusal or concerning trends.
  • Compute the percentatge change for each line item as follows: (current balance – previous balance)/previous balance.By closely analyzing this, we can monitor if the company’s performance is improving or declining. (textbook p. 4-38)

The horizontal analaysis is really good at helping spot trends over time. This allows us to take a closer look to better understand the implications these changes may have, good or bad.

5-6. Construct an IFAS Table that summarizes internal factors

One way of conducting an organizational analysis to examine a company’s strengths and weaknesses is by using the Strategic Audit found in Appendix 1.A at the end of Chapter 1. The audit provides a checklist of questions by area of concern. For example, Part IV of the audit examines corporate structure, culture, and resources. It looks at organizational resources and capabilities in terms of the functional areas of marketing, finance, R&D, operations, human resources, and information systems, among others.

Synthesis of Internal Factors (IFAS)

After strategists have scanned the internal organizational environment and identified factors for their particular corporation, they may want to summarize their analysis of these factors using a form such as that given in Table 5–2. This IFAS (Internal Factor Analysis Summary) Table is one way to organize the internal factors into the generally accepted categories of strengths and weaknesses as well as to examine how well a particular company’s management is responding to these specific factors in light of the perceived importance of these factors to the company. Use the VRIO framework (Value, Rareness, Imitability, and Organization) to assess the importance of each of the factors that might be considered strengths. Except for its internal orientation, this IFAS Table is built the same way as the EFAS Table described in Chapter 4 (in Table 4–5). To use the IFAS Table, complete the following steps:

 

In Column 1 (Internal Factors), list the 8 to 10 most important strengths and weaknesses facing the company.

In Column 2 (Weight), assign a weight to each factor from 1.0 (Most Important) to 0.0 (Not Important) based on that factor’s probable impact on a particular company’s current strategic position. The higher the weight, the more important is this factor to the current and future success of the company. All weights must sum to 1.0 regardless of the number of factors.

In Column 3 (Rating), assign a rating to each factor from 5.0 (Outstanding) to 1.0 (Poor) based on management’s specific response to that particular factor. Each rating is a judgment regarding how well the company’s management is currently dealing with each specific internal factor.

In Column 4 (Weighted Score), multiply the weight in Column 2 for each factor times its rating in Column 3 to obtain that factor’s weighted score.

In Column 5 (Comments), note why a particular factor was selected and/or how its weight and rating were estimated.

Finally, add the weighted scores for all the internal factors in Column 4 to determine the total weighted score for that particular company. The total weighted score indicates how well a particular company is responding to current and expected factors in its internal environment. The score can be used to compare that firm to other firms in its industry. Check to ensure that the total weighted score truly reflects the company’s current performance in terms of profitability and market share. The total weighted score for an average firm in an industry is always 3.0.

As an example of this procedure, Table 5–2 includes a number of internal factors for Maytag Corporation in 1995 (before Maytag was acquired by Whirlpool) with corresponding weights, ratings, and weighted scores provided. Note that Maytag’s total weighted score is 3.05, meaning that the corporation is about average compared to the strengths and weaknesses of others in the major home appliance industry.
