Expatriates in Foreign Countries: Canada

Accomplishing an international assignment in Canada requires one to understand the heritage of the country which is French and English. There is a lot of cultural diversity in Canada following the significant immigration from European and Asian countries. The citizens of Canada value cultural diversity even though individualism is ranked high in the country. “The Constitution Act prohibits discrimination against individual citizens on the basis of race, color, religion, or sex” (internationalbusiness.com). Canadians are majorly Christians even though other religious groups exist. When it comes to business, Canadians are self-confident and they measure success through personal achievements. With a high level of ethnocentrism, they value privacy and they tend to welcome discussions on general topics more. Due to the high level of individualism, the people of Canada are more self-dependent and they look out for themselves and their families.

Business Mentality

· Unlike in the United States where the business culture is almost the same, the business culture in Canada varies depending on the type of business and region. One has to do their homework well and understand all regions, and ensure they prepare thoroughly for meetings.

· In business meetings, everyone’s opinion must be respected regardless of their rank and status. Everyone has the right to express themselves and be heard.

· Business decisions are made based of facts

· 9.00am to 5.00pm are the preferred business hours. Appointments are done in the morning hours.

Greetings

· Unlike in the U.S where even a simple “hello” is enough greeting, a handshake is the appropriate greeting in Canada. The handshake is accompanied by strong eye contact and the exchange of pleasantries.

Protocols for Interacting (Art of Conversation)

· English and French are the main languages in Canada and in any business meeting, only the two are used or one can seek the services of an interpreter.

· Canadians view the use of foreign language in the presence of other people as rude. While in different cities, you have to pay attention to the local traditions, follow etiquette rules, and maintain a reserved demeanor.

· Avoid comparing Canada with your country as the locals are individualistic and self-confident. They love their culture and they don’t like people who are boastful. Do not initiate topics on comparing Canada with the United States.

Body Language and Appearance

· Eye contact is essential in any business meeting. Otherwise, people may think you are insincere and insecure in your business dealings. Canadians feel more comfortable communicating when they can look into your eyes

· A two feet distance is enough when people are having a conversation.

· Even though there is a cold climate in Canada, your wardrobe has to stay conservative. New or trendy dressing is not welcomed in business meetings. The activity and weather will determine your dressing code. Casual can be used when one is not working.

· Scents such as perfumes are not welcomed as allergies and asthma are common with Canadians due to the cold climate in the country.

Business Meetings and Meals

· It is important to maintain good appearance and a conservative dress code when going for business meetings. Dress according to the weather to avoid amused looks.

· Punctuality is appreciated in business meetings. However, for social events, arriving 15 or 30 minutes late is allowed.

· Gifts are given after closing a deal. Ensure the gift is modest.

· Do not speak while eating. Apply standard table manners and do not eat until everyone at the table has been served.
