Many Southerners believed that the results of the election directly threatened the institution of slavery and their “states’ rights.” Upon the secession of the Lower South, tensions between the national government and that of the states increased. Soon, small-scale skirmishes would emerge, and what appeared at first to be a rebellion would turn into a lengthy civil war.
