XYZ Company; StrikeZone Case Study

Introduction

The case study involves John Smith, a project manager who was tasked with a project for developing innovative software for a company, Baseball Championship League (BCL) but was unable to deliver the project in time. The project involved John who was the project manager at XYZ Company, his team of experts and the client, BCL. The methodology that John had chosen doesn’t deliver results, and he is considering implementing a different methodology.

The methodology used in the project was the waterfall methodology. This methodology handles things sequentially from the concept and planning phase up to the completion and maintenance phase. It defines the project requirements at the beginning and alterations are done only when necessary (Katcherovski, 2012).  It is mainly used in software development where rigorous planning and predictable process are paramount. The project managers strive to eliminate any risks by outlining all the crucial steps to be carried out in the project and defining the scope and the budget. It invests times in the early stages of the project to ensure proper design and requirements are met to save on time and also the effort that could have been used in correcting problems later (Katcherovski, 2012).Project phases are done in succession. In the StrikeZone project, it is true to conclude the methodology used was the waterfall due to the following reasons. Firstly, the project manager had assembled a team of expertise to develop a sequential schedule. The schedule had determined the software requirements and several that could arise in its development. The project manager had also met with the various departments and assigned each task a certain duration of time.

There are certain areas of success in the project management. Firstly, the project manager is coordinating with his team to develop the project schedule. The project manager also assigns each task a certain duration of time and develops the software requirements in the project schedule. The other success, though achieved much later in the project was the decision by the project manager to adopt another methodology after the failure of the first methodology. It can be regarded as a success as it will lead to moving the project forward.

However, there are several issues in the project management. The first issue is the delay in the design and code tests. The second issue was poor time management that led to the project manager shortening the time for addressing issues with the software and also postponement of the meeting with the client. The other issue was raised by BCL that the StrikeZone prototype was inconsistent with the overall goals and vision of the company.

The process groups are initiating, planning, executing, monitoring and controlling (Roseke, 2016). In the initiating process, the client, Baseball Championship League (BCL) approached XYZ Company to develop an innovative software program called StrikeZone that would improve the accuracy of strikes detection during baseball games.

In the planning process, a meeting was first held then the project sequential schedule developed. The project manager also assigned various departments various tasks. The project manager also reiterated that the tasks would be performed in order over a cycle. In the executing process, the team developed the design and code tests though they delayed. A meeting was also planned with the client to discuss the project and voice any concerns.

In the monitoring and controlling process, the client was concerned that the prototype was inconsistent with its goals and visions. The project manager negotiated for additional six months to revise the prototype. The project manager also decided to try out a new methodology to implement propel the project forward.
