geothic eng lab report 1
- TEXTBOOK : Hydrometer Analysis : Lab 5 in 8th, 9th edition
- Objective : To determine Grain Size Distribution in a soil for the fraction that is finer than U.S. No.200 sieve size(0.075mm) using hydrometer analysis
- ASTM hydrometer is calibrated up to a reading of 60 at T=20ºC for soil particles having Gs = 2.65
- Hydrometer reading = 30? 30g of soil solids in suspension per 1000 ml of soil-water mixture at T=20ºC.
- Corrections
- Temperature Correction FT = -4.85+0.25T
- Meniscus Correction Fm : the difference between the top and bottom of the meniscus.
- Zero Correction Fz : Accounts for the effect of using a deflocculating agent.

- Write down the procedures described in the video(RatnaYesuraj, 2016) and compare them with the procedures given in the laboratory textbook if necessary.
- Present the completed test table, sample calculations, and the grain-size distribution graph similar to that shown in Fig.5-6 in the textbook.
- Discussion section will include the semilogarithmic plot combining the results of sieve and hydrometer analysis (see step 9 and 10 in section 5.6) and the percentages of various fractions of gravel, sand, silt and clay, and clay-size particles present in the soil.
- Follow lab report guidelines under Modules/Lab Information on Canvas.
